The 6 Days Machame Route, also called the “Whiskey Route”, is one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular and visually stunning trails. It offers excellent acclimatization, diverse terrain, and panoramic views as you make your way to the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—Africa’s highest point.

Unlike the Marangu Route, Machame requires camping overnight, offering a more adventurous and immersive trekking experience. This 6-day version is designed for fit and experienced hikers who want a faster ascent without compromising safety or scenery.

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (2,835m)

Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Vegetation: Rainforest

Begin your Kilimanjaro journey after registration at Machame Gate. Trek through dense rainforest rich in birds and monkeys to reach Machame Camp by late afternoon. Trails can be muddy, especially in the rainy season.

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,850m)

Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Vegetation: Moorland

Leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone, with giant heathers and volcanic rock formations. Today’s shorter hike gives you time to acclimatize and enjoy views of Kibo Peak.

Overnight: Shira Camp


Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,976m)

Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Vegetation: Alpine Desert

This is your acclimatization day. Climb up to Lava Tower to reach higher altitude before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” approach aids your adjustment to altitude.

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

The day starts with a scramble up the Barranco Wall, offering stunning views of the Karanga Valley below. The trail then levels out and you arrive at Karanga Camp by mid-afternoon.

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Vegetation: Alpine Desert

Today’s short but steep climb leads to Barafu Camp, your launch point for the summit. Arrive early to rest, hydrate, and prepare for your summit attempt at midnight.

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Distance: 17+ km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Vegetation: Arctic to Rainforest

Begin your summit climb at midnight, reaching Stella Point (5,756m) just before sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebrations, descend all the way down via Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, where your driver will meet you for your transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.
